Sugar and Blood Pressure: Checks That Keep You Out of Hospital
Diabetes and high blood pressure are very common in Pakistan and often have no symptoms until damage is done. Regular checks are the simplest protection.
Written by Dr. Fanila Adhi, MBBS, RMP. General information, not a replacement for a consultation.
Why regular checks matter
Uncontrolled sugar and blood pressure slowly damage the heart, kidneys, eyes and nerves. Many people feel completely fine while this happens. Regular checks catch problems early, when a small medicine or routine change is enough.
Who should get checked
- Adults over 35, even without symptoms.
- Anyone with a parent or sibling who has diabetes or high BP.
- People who are overweight, smoke, or are not physically active.
- Women who had high sugar or BP during pregnancy.
Checking at home
- Use a validated automatic BP machine. Sit quietly for five minutes, feet flat, arm supported at heart level.
- For sugar, keep a simple log of fasting and after-meal readings as your doctor advises.
- Bring or send the log to your follow-up. A week of readings says more than a single clinic reading.
Tests your doctor may ask for
- HbA1c: your average sugar over about three months.
- Kidney function and urine tests: to check for early kidney effects.
- Cholesterol (lipid profile): heart risk goes up when these conditions come together.
Targets are different for different people, depending on age and other conditions, so agree yours with your doctor.
Everyday changes that help
- Cut down on sugar, sweet drinks, and extra salt in cooking.
- Smaller portions of rice and roti, more vegetables and daal.
- A 30-minute walk most days.
- Take medicines regularly, even when you feel fine. Do not stop them without talking to your doctor.
Get urgent help if there is: chest pain, sudden weakness or numbness on one side, slurred speech, severe headache with very high BP, confusion, or very high or very low sugar with drowsiness. Call Rescue 1122 or Edhi 115.
Common questions
How often should blood pressure be checked?
If your BP is normal, at least once a year after age 35. If you have high BP, your doctor may ask for home readings several times a week at first.
Can a home visit doctor check sugar and BP?
Yes. Dr. Fanila checks sugar and blood pressure during home visits, which is helpful for elderly patients who cannot travel.
Can I stop medicine once my readings are normal?
No, not on your own. Normal readings usually mean the medicine is working. Discuss any change with your doctor first.
